Colombia's President Warns 'I Would Return to Arms Again' if United States Invades.

The US President along with President Gustavo Petro have escalated the volume of their exchange, heightening strains bilaterally following American military units targeted Venezuela with the aim of deposing the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He operates cocaine mills and cocaine factories and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.

Rising Rhetoric coupled with Allegations

Talking to journalists on Sunday, Trump hinted at comparable military action against Colombia, asserting the nation faces serious problems and led by a problematic figure involved in producing cocaine and trafficking it to America."

Although Colombia remains the world’s largest source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication linking President Gustavo Petro, the nation's current leader, is in any way connected to the business.

A Deteriorating Partnership

This nation for decades served as a close partner of the US in the struggle combating drug cartels and enjoyed bipartisan support in the US capital, yet ties have deteriorated markedly since Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is largely controlled by guerrilla factions including the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom laid down arms subsequent to a landmark accord.

Petro's Firm Answer

Upon being questioned if a military operation like that in Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea to me."

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who left armed struggle in the last century, firmly denied these allegations. "I am not an illegitimate leader and certainly not a drug trafficker," he declared.

"The US president speaks uninformed. End the false accusations," he wrote in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will turn into numerous insurgents in the hills. And if they detain me, which a large part of the population holds in high esteem, they will unleash the ‘jaguar’ of the nation," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

Petro spent part of his youth participating of the leftist M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed he did not engaged in fighting. Upon leaving the group, he participated in writing the constitutional rewrite in 1991 and later became an influential politician. He was mayor of Bogotá before being elected the presidency.

"I made a vow to never again hold arms again ... but for the homeland I would take up the fight," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures along with Widespread Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister stated that Petro's protection team had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with Trump, however, leaders spanning the ideological divide have denounced the possibility of American military action on Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Strains

American authorities cancelled his travel authorization subsequent to he called on US military personnel to disobey orders that violate law. Months later, authorities imposed financial sanctions targeting Petro, his spouse and various key allies.

Concurrently the US was building up its troop levels in the Caribbean and striking alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed strikes on boats in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
