The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
