Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, fans can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
